At the conclusion of the Shanghai International Children’s Bookfair, we look back over three amazing days of meetings with China’s top publishers and give a special thanks to the Australia Council who hosted Alc Agency for the event. This fair, in such an amazing city, has been the highlight bookfair of the year so far!
It was an opportunity to meet new Chinese publishers, reacquaint with our current customers, and present so many titles. We had a wide range of interest but the focus was definitely on younger picture books and non-fiction, with books in a series being in high demand.
There are so many rules that Chinese publishers have to follow that make publishing cutting-edge YA fiction a challenge, but we did have some interest the award-winning books and authors that we represent from the UQP and other lists.
Logistics for the fair was handled superbly by the Australia Council and big thank you to Karen Le Roy and Rosemary Hind for both the support before and at the fair. And to Lillian and Shin at B.K.Norton for helping with the appointments and keeping the diary full! It has also been a pleasure working alongside other Australia publishing professionals.
The meetings would not have run so smoothly without our charming and oh so smart translator Cornelia, seen in the picture below selling Zen tales to the Chinese. Don’t you just love children’s books!
