Between the Pages

Between the Pages is the story of two brave boys, Billy and Jack, and their exciting adventures in the rainforest. Chased by lizards, emus and tree dragons, the two boys stay together and help each other to escape through the pages of the book.

Joan van Loon was born in Melbourne and grew up in the inner-city suburb of Hawthorn. She taught English for some years and after her marriage to John and the birth of their three daughters, she began writing. Her children’s picture storybooks have been published in Australia and overseas. She has also written short stories for adults. Joan now lives in Elsternwick with her husband John and works as a librarian at Mentone Girls Grammar.


Chantal was born in Paris where she studied at The School of Applied Arts and commenced her career as a graphic designer and illustrator in the advertising and publishing world. When she arrived in Melbourne 15 years ago with a wonderful folio of work – both professional and personal – she realised her dream of illustrating children’s books. Chantal works for some of Australia’s most renowned publishers including Penguin, Allen and Unwin, University of Queensland Press and Macmillan. Through the years, she has had very rewarding partnerships with some writers, in particular with Joan van Loon. Together they worked on one of children’s most loved books: Smelly Chantelly (shortlisted for 3 consecutive years in the YABBA award).
